In-person Exam for online NJ Boating Safety Courses: Upon a student's successful completion of an Internet boat safety course (Boat-ed.com or BOATERexam.com), the Internet course provider shall provide the student with written proof that they successfully completed the course (Certificate of Completion). All Internet boating safety courses shall conclude with an in-person, proctored, written examination. Prior to taking the in-person, proctored, written examination, students must provide a printed paper copy of their proof of successful completion of an approved Internet course, as well as presenting a government-issued photo ID reflecting their date of birth. For any student that does not have a government-issued photo ID, you will need to show a birth certificate or other legal identifying document exhibiting birthdate. The minimum age for students is 13 years old. Students must also provide a printed paper copy of their receipt for payment for the In-Person Exam. Upon satisfaction of the above requirements, a closed book, four-answer option, multiple choice examination of 60 questions will be administered.
Any individual that fails their first attempt at successfully completing the in-person, proctored, written examination shall wait at least 24 hours before attempting the test a second time. Any individual that fails on their second attempt at successfully completing the in-person, proctored, written examination shall re-take and successfully complete another approved boating safety course, either online or in-classroom, in order to be eligible to receive a New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate.
"Successfully complete" means that the student was present for all classroom instruction, completed any assigned home study, or, if the student completed an Internet course, completed all requirements and scored a minimum of 80 percent on the written examination described above.
